For the second, the PCIM Europe 2023 we will be focusing on a specific country: the United States. On this occasion, we asked our long-standing exhibitors operating in the US for their assessment of the US market, especially with regard to the power electronics industry.
- How long has your company been operating in the US?
Mitsubishi Electric opened its United States office in 2002. Recently the Power Device group, which had previously been handled via external representation was relocated into Mitsubishi Electric US. The Power Device Group has been a part of Mitsubishi Electric US since 2018.
- For what reasons did you decide to locate in the US?
We are located in the US to serve the power system engineering, design, and manufacturing customers in the United States and the rest of the Americas.
- In which industries do you think the US market has been leading in recent years?
The US market has always been a leader in technology innovation. Recently US engineering design has led the way in electric vehicle design (e.g. Tesla), renewable energy power conversion (e.g. wind power conversion equipment), and electronic grid management systems driven by the demands of the aging US power grid.
- Which power electronics products from the US are in demand in Europe and vice versa?
Europe and the US have many common product demands including HVIGBTs for traction and power transmission, IGBT power modules for motor drives, SiC devices for automotive and high efficiency applications, and HVIGBTs for medium voltage drive applications.
- What makes the US market special as an industrial partner in the power electronics industry sector? What is the most important advantage for you?
The US market is special as an industrial partner in the power electronics industry sector because the US had the first high volume all electric car company in Tesla. Additionally, the US has many unique medical power electronics applications, and the emerging grid management sector is becoming very competitive as that market expands.
- Does the US market stand out from other markets such as Europe, Asia, etc. in the field of power electronics?
I think in many ways the US and EU markets are similar, both focus on the higher power applications. It could be argued that Europe has a large base of alternative energy companies as well as a broader battery charger network. The US seems to have more medium voltage drive applications and grid management companies.
- In your opinion, what can European companies learn from US companies in general?
It is hard to say as Mitsubishi Electric US serves the Americas and Mitsubishi Electric Europe serves Europe. One thing is for sure, that in the global economy, collaboration and communication between Europe and the Americas is critical to global success and competitive solutions.
