The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE is the largest solar energy research institute in Europe. It creates technological foundations for supplying energy efficiently and on an environmentally sound basis in industrialized, threshold and developing countries. With its research focusing on energy conversion, energy efficiency, energy distribution and energy storage, it contributes to a broad application of new technology. The department of power electronics and grid technologies of Fraunhofer ISE has more than 30 years of experience in the design of power electronic circuits.

Together with clients and partners from industry, politics and society in general, Fraunhofer ISE develops technical solutions that can be implemented in practice.

It investigates and develops materials, components, systems and processes in five business areas. Its innovative strength is documented, among other indicators, by the large number of patent applications. The Institute also offers testing and certification services.

ISE develops electronic components and systems for many applications. Our focus lies in converters such as inverters or transformers and the required controls for their implementation in energy supply and transmission systems. Special emphasis is put on optimizing the complete system and achieving the highest energy efficiency.

Power electronics is a key technology for the energy supply sector, drive engineering or the automobile industry and plays an especially important role in the transformation of our energy supply system. Due to continual developments in electronic devices and improved switching concepts, many electronic components today are smaller, lighter, more efficient and cost-effective than their predecessors. With this, larger power ranges up to the multi-megawatt scale open up and totally new functionalities have first become possible.

Fraunhofer ISE develops electronic components and systems for many applications. Our focus lies in converters such as inverters or transformers and the required controls for their implementation in energy supply and transmission systems. Special emphasis is put on optimizing the complete system and achieving the highest energy efficiency. Therefore we are working with wide band gap (WBG) power transistors since 2007. In 2008 Fraunhofer ISE set a new world record of 98.5 % in conversion efficiency with an inverter based on silicon carbide transistors. This record could be improved in 2009 to an efficiency of more than 99 %. In the last years Fraunhofer ISE developed various power converters with very high power densities and high efficiencies by using some of the latest available SiC- and GaN transistors. Fraunhofer ISE has a long experience in terrestrial use (including e-mobility applications) of WBG transistors, which can be transferred to aviation technology areas.
