DC-Coupled 30 kW EV Charger Development Platform / Reference Design

09.06.2026

Referent: Simon Goodwin, Senior Manager, Global Applications, Vishay Electronic

Vishay’s eMobilityLAB was formed to strengthen cooperation between application and component development. By bringing in-depth knowledge of components to application development, innovative solutions are enabled. Embracing the high efficiency that DC-coupled electronics can offer, we present the development status of a DC-coupled EV charger development platform, or reference design. The design aims to enable high efficiency, bidirectional energy transfer between a DC microgrid and an EV battery at up to 30 kW. This allows PV energy harvested during peak hours to be transferred without using the AC infrastructure and its limitations. This development kit, co-developed with Altera and the TH Cologne, uses the EVerest open-source firmware stack for standards-compliant, interoperable, and secure EV communication. Further partners are sought to join the development, e.g., for wiring, connectors, and housing. The design will be available on Vishay.com once fully released.
