SM Contact

Description

The PININSERT 3200 from SM Contact is a high-performance pin insertion machine designed for seamless integration into PCB assembly lines. Equipped with an SMEMA-compatible conveyor system, it offers fully automated insertion of pins with high precision and speed. The unit can be configured as a Double-Head (DH) version, enabling insertion of two pin types in a single cycle without readjustment. With a cycle time of just 500 ms per pin, it handles standard pin lengths up to 25 mm (or up to 60 mm in long version) and cross-sections up to 1.5 × 1.5 mm. The machine supports PCB dimensions from 50 × 50 mm to 400 × 400 mm and accepts various pin feeding systems (bandolier, floor reel, terminal). Its insertion head is interchangeable, and insertion accuracy is maintained at ± 0.05 mm (CPK > 1.68). Key features include encoder-controlled depth, motorized X/Y axes (optional), laser or camera inspection of height and positioning, pin presence detection, force control, and compliance with CE safety standards. Designed for applications in automotive, electronics, alternative energy and telecommunications, the PININSERT 3200 offers reliability, flexibility and high throughput in demanding production environments.

O-pin connector

O-pin connector

The patented O‑PIN connector is a next‑generation, splice‑crimp–based terminal for power modules that replaces insertion or copper‑sleeve contacts to cut costs, scrap, and assembly risk while improving reliability and repeatability in production lines.
Unlike traditional insertion terminals that demand extreme tolerances, expensive precision parts, and high press forces that risk pin breakage, O‑PIN eliminates insertion damage and tolerance stacking through compression‑based connectivity.
Its crimped interface delivers low‑resistance, vibration‑resistant electrical and mechanical performance tailored for IGBT and power module assemblies, with consistent pin integrity and flat contact surfaces in mass production.
Delivered on a bandolier strip, O‑PIN is optimized for automation: jig placement, DBC assembly, reflow soldering, and module release occur without manual handling, reducing downtime and misalignment.
The process manages overall pin inclination within about ±1° in a single flow, preventing the cumulative errors common to sleeve assembly and insertion.
SM Contact further supports rapid industrialization with free sample programs based on wire‑derived designs, enabling quick evaluation and scale‑up.
Material options include a cupronickel alloy for solder‑paste processes offering around 140 N pull‑out resistance, and E‑Cu‑based geometries adapted for ultrasonic welding and customer‑specific sizes.
By combining patented design with splice‑crimp precision and automated handling, O‑PIN delivers simpler installation, higher yields, tighter tolerances, and faster, more economical production for next‑generation power electronics.
