Vishay eMobilityLAB: Rugged SiC and Low TCR Shunts Enabling Solid-State Power Distribution Units

7 May 2025

Speaker: Simon Goodwin, Senior Manager, Global Applications, Vishay Electronic

Vishay’s eMobityLAB was formed to strengthen the cooperation between application and component development, bringing deep technical knowledge about the components into application development to enable innovative solutions.A SiC solid-state relay based multi-channel power distribution unit with < 1 µs overcurrent reaction time is presented, highlighting the possibilities this collaborative and multi-disciplinary approach enables. The quick overcurrent reaction times are enabled by the fast switch-off of the SiC MOSFETS and a sigma-delta based signal processing chain tailored to the application. A key aspect is using the inductance of the resistive current sense element to obtain faster filter settling times and therefore decreased reaction times in overcurrent events and high accuracy during DC operation.
