Designing Robust and Reliable Power Converter with WBG Devices – Choose the Parameters Wisely

8 May 2025

Speaker: Pradip Chatterjee, Senior Principal Regional Application Engineer, Nexperia

WBG is growing in popularity in xEV and green energy power conversion stages. Especially GaN and SiC are the main WBG material we are talking about. With various converter types, each with different application requirements, the device parameters need to be selected carefully.Apart from achieving higher efficiency and superior performance, which is necessitated by environmental sustainability, lifetime and reliability are the main challenges to be addressed. In this presentation, the focus will be on selecting the key parameters and less obvious parameters of WBG devices, which influence and impact the design considerations like efficiency in a variety of soft and hard switched converter systems. We will also investigate the important reliability parameters, especially at elevated temperature operations which impact the lifetime of the devices and thereby system.
