Capacitors for power electronic applications and innovations in the field

In episode 13 of the PCIM Podcast, Thomas Ebel discusses the crucial role of film capacitors and aluminum electrolytic capacitors in current and future power electronic applications.

He explores how innovations in dielectric materials, such as the use of nanotechnology and copolymers in metallized film capacitors, are set to significantly enhance power density. Additionally, Thomas highlights advancements in polymer electrolytes and novel anodization processes, which promise to dramatically improve the performance of polymer aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

Thomas Ebel graduated with a PhD in solid state chemistry from the University in Münster, Germany in 1995. After several stages as R&D Engineer, R&D Director and CTO at serval entities of Epcos in the field of Aluminium electrolytic capacitors he became managing director at FTCAP in Germany from 2008 to 2018. Since then, he works as full Professor in capacitor technology, and Head of the Centre for Industrial Electronics at the University of Southern Denmark, SDU in Sønderborg, Denmark. He is PCIM Advisory board and IEEE Senior member.
