500kVA/Liter High Density 3-Phase Inverter Based on PCB Embedded Power Module

10 Jun 2026

Speaker: Wiljan Vermeer, Researcher Power Electronics, Fraunhofer IZM

This project presents the design and experimental validation of a three-phase traction inverter achieving a power density of 500 kVA/L within a compact 1-liter package. By combining PCB-embedded SiC power modules, novel integrated capacitor technology, and compact extruded cooling structures, the inverter pushes the limits of achievable power density. Multi-physics design enables extremely low stray inductance, clean high-speed switching with zero gate resistance, and efficient thermal management. Experimental results demonstrate low overshoot, minimal ringing, and reliable thermal performance at high current and voltage levels.
